History
An early Roman presence in the canton is proven by a Roman mosaic discovered in Vichten, which is now exhibited at the National Museum in Luxembourg City.
The medieval heritage is clearly visible in the Useldange Castle.
Over the centuries, Canton Redange developed through trade, agriculture, and craftsmanship. Oil mills and grain mills played an important role in its economic growth.
The mills of Beckerich and the slate industry in Martelange-Haut illustrate the economic development of the canton in an authentic rural setting.
Canton Redange is also the birthplace of Nicolas Grang, who took part in expeditions to the Congo with Henry Morton Stanley at the end of the 19th century. Today, a street in Buschrodt is still named after him.

Culture
Canton Redange is rich in traditions. The local drink Maitrank—an old recipe made from Luxembourg white wine, cognac, and woodruff—is still served in many cafés and at local festivals for its mood-enhancing effects.
The Kropemann Festival, held every year in Redange, is a folkloric element of the canton’s identity. According to legend, the Kropemann is a creature that pulls children into wells. This legend was told to keep children away from water.
Canton Redange is also the birthplace of a key figure in European politics, Jean‑Claude Juncker, long-serving Prime Minister of Luxembourg and former President of the European Commission.
