of the canton
Canton Grevenmacher is located in the east of Luxembourg. It has one official city: Grevenmacher. With approximately 33,712 inhabitants (2025) and an area of 211 km², the canton marks the northern part of the Luxembourgish wine region of the Moselle.
Today, the canton is known, among other things, as an important destination for wine tourism.

Landscape
The landscape of Canton Grevenmacher is characterized by deep valleys and high plateaus, with soils made of Keuper and limestone. The rivers Moselle, Sûre, Syre, White Ernz, and Black Ernz shape the landscape. In Wasserbillig, the Sûre and Moselle rivers meet, marking the lowest point in Luxembourg. Thanks to the microclimate and fertile soils along the Moselle, the canton is ideally suited for viticulture.

History
Historically, the canton was shaped by antiquity and its
strategically important location. The Celts and later the Romans settled along
the river Moselle. The church tower of St. Laurent was built on the remains of an old
Roman tower. Vineyards have been cultivated in the canton for a long time.

The city of Grevenmacher is a medieval fortified city that controlled trade and river transport, thus gaining importance. Over the centuries, viticulture developed into an important economic and tourist sector in the canton. The port of Mertert is the largest port in Luxembourg, and river shipping remains significant to this day. In Canton Grevenmacher, in Betzdorf, SES—a pioneer in the satellite sector—has its headquarters.
