Kasematten

The casemates of Luxembourg City form a vast network of underground galleries, a vestige of the former defence system. Built in the 17th century under Spanish rule, they were expanded over two centuries by various occupying powers, including the French engineer Vauban. At their peak, they extended over 23 km and reached depths of up to 40 metres, contributing to the city’s nickname “Gibraltar of the North”. After the neutralisation of Luxembourg in 1867, much of the network was dismantled. Since 1994, the Old Town and its fortifications, including the casemates, have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In addition to the Bock Casemates, visitors can also explore the Pétrusse Casemates and discover the mysterious underground world of the capital.
