Canton Remich is located in the east of Luxembourg. It has one official city: Remich. With around 24,608 inhabitants (2025) spread over 172 km², the canton is part of the southernmost region of the Luxembourg Moselle wine region and is world-famous for the municipality of Schengen. The canton is characterized by plateaus and vineyards.

Landscape

The soil of the canton consists of Keuper and limestone, which, in combination with the Moselle, provide ideal conditions for wine and vineyards. The local microclimate and rich soils make Canton Remich, together with Canton Grevenmacher, famous for AOP wines and Crémant de Luxembourg. A unique site in Canton Remich is the Biodiversum, a protected nature reserve that combines the rocky areas and biodiversity of the Moselle Valley with nature-connected architecture.

History

People have settled in Canton Remich since the Bronze Age. In Schwebsange, graves were discovered dating back to between 1250 and 750 BC. The Romans also settled along the Moselle River and cultivated vineyards, laying the foundation for today’s wine culture. Today, you can still see an ancient Roman burial chamber in Bech-Kleinmacher or a Gallo-Roman theater in Dalheim.

The city of Remich was an important trading city along the Moselle for centuries. It had fortifications, and the church tower of Remich was built on the remains of an ancient Roman watchtower. You can still see arrow slits in the tower, as it was used for defensive purposes. There was also a castle where, according to legend, Saint Cunibert—a Frankish aristocrat—once lived. The castle was located where the town hall and school stand today. In 852, a battle between Vikings and Franks took place in Remich. The city was known for centuries for fishing and shipping, which visitors can still see today near the Porte Saint-Nicolas, the patron saint of shipping and fishing.

In the 19th century, Remich also had a plaster factory and a tannery.

Typical towns like Bech-Kleinmacher and Greiveldange reflect the typical Moselle architecture—a mirror of the region’s artisan traditions.

The municipality of Schengen, located at the tripoint with France and Germany, became world-famous in 1985 with the Schengen Agreement. The village is also known for its castle, which dates back to the 14th century. Today, only a tower remains of the old castle, next to the newer castle from the 19th century.

Today, Canton Remich combines nature, savoir-vivre, and architecture: the Tuscany of Northern Europe, with Moselle wines. The city of Remich welcomes visitors with its picturesque old town streets and the flair of the Moselle Riviera.
