Vianden Castle

The name Vianden and its castle enjoy a worldwide reputation, attracting thousands of visitors every year.

The monumental complex of Vianden Castle illustrates the transition from the Romanesque to the Gothic style, with a Byzantine influence that is unusual for this region but which highlights its ‘European’ significance. Delivering an impressive testament to several centuries of history of a powerful lineage, Vianden Castle was one of the most imposing feudal residences in Europe.

The interior is distinguished by the richness and harmony of its defensive, representative and religious elements. From a terrace and the parapet walk leading to the magnificent upper chapel, one can enjoy a splendid view of the town of Vianden, nestled between two valleys and protected by a surrounding wall.

The visitor centre serves as the setting for a living museum, featuring a café, a shop, an exhibition and a 3D projection that helps visitors understand the architectural evolution of the castle.

One of the main challenges throughout the mine’s history was constant flooding.

Today, part of the galleries 50 metres below ground is open to the public. Visitors can learn about the harsh working conditions of copper mining, while a digital reconstruction and video vividly illustrate the daily work and history of the mine.
